The Unseen Work that Builds Trust

While tidy spaces are often taken for granted, effective cleaning can turn behind-the-scenes work into a foundation for building strong client relationships.

Cleaning is one of those things people only notice when something goes wrong. The work itself is largely invisible, and when it’s done right, it stays that way. Trust is built in the spaces people barely register, and it’s earned through consistency over time.

Above all, effective cleaning has everything to do with the people doing the work, the standards they’re held to and the honesty in the operation.

Consistency Comes from People

Trust always comes back to honesty and transparency. Clients need to know what’s happening in their environment, including when something isn’t working. We need to be clear about what we’re delivering, what’s changing and what we’re seeing on the ground — that’s true on day one of a contract, and it’s true three years in. The minute a service partner stops being direct with a client, trust starts to erode. After that, it doesn’t matter is the level of cleaning excellence.

Cleaning maintains consistency when the people doing the work stay long enough to get good at it. Janitorial work has historically high turnover, and you don’t fight that with a slicker recruiting funnel. You fight it by hiring the right people, training them well and taking care of them once they’re in the building. When that happens, they stay in their roles and perform consistently, which drives value for a client.

That means our entire focus has to be on the frontline Placemaker. Not what they can do for us, but what we need to do to make sure they succeed. If we’re not on the floor being both fair and present with our teams, knowing their names, where they’re from, what drives them, then we aren’t actually leading an operation.

Prioritizing Predictive Cleaning

Instead of running on rigid schedules, cleaning mostly operates with data at the forefront.

For example, in the aviation sector, we tie into the flight information display system, so our teams know when a flight has taken off and we have 15 minutes to turn the gate. IoT sensors track restroom traffic and stocking levels for paper, soap and toilet paper. Sensors in other spaces, such as airport gates, can tell us how many people are in the area at any given moment.

That visibility replaces blanket schedules with smarter ones. The old approach was sending a team to every restroom four times per shift. The reality is that one restroom might need eight visits in a shift while another only requires one. AI-driven scheduling puts labor where and when it’s needed; we can see how any site in the network is performing in real time.

Sustainability also influences how we choose every product and every tool on the cart. We hold ourselves to the Green Seal GS-42 standard, which is more rigorous than the GS-37 standard required for LEED certification. Our vacuums are HEPA filtered and our carpet care follows Carpet and Rug Institute guidelines. We use pre-wet microfibers instead of spray bottles, keeping chemicals out of the air our Placemakers and clients breathe.

Every tool, task and chemical has to be safe for the person using it first and foremost.

What Clients Don’t Always See

There’s a technical depth to this work that most people never get a chance to appreciate. The chemistry of cleaning agents, the math behind route design, the integration of robotics and sensors. Cleaning is not “dump the trash and go,” but rather a technical service line, and the people who do it well are capable, skilled professionals.

We want to be a company where people can build a career. That means real pathways for growth, investment in technical skills and earnest respect for the work. When clients get to know the people behind their operation, perceptions change. The work might still largely go unseen, but the people doing it shouldn’t be.

That’s what trust really comes down to. Not just clean spaces, but the consistency, honesty and care that make them possible each day.
