Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15) honors the cultures and contributions of Latino and Hispanic individuals, celebrating those with ancestry from Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Spain. To celebrate, we spoke with a few placemakers about their work, their heritage, and what Hispanic Heritage Month means to them. Here’s what they had to say:
Ormandy Hernandez – Talent Acquisition Project Manager, North America
As a Dominican, Ormandy says he was raised with the spirit of courage and unity.
“Growing up in a diverse place like New York, where all cultures were accepted, made me believe that the whole world was as accommodating and accepting,” he says. “Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.”
He says that by creating awareness and fostering opportunities for education, we can bridge the gap. He points to Cesar Chavez and his view that the preservation of one’s own culture doesn’t require contempt or disrespect of others.
“That is why Hispanic Heritage Month is so important to me. By celebrating, we honor our past, embrace our present, and empower our future. It serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us that our rich heritage is not just a source of pride but also a path to a more inclusive and harmonious world.”
Jose Fuentes – Marketing Manager, Café Marketing
Jose, who joined ISS Guckenheimer in 2023, says he views Hispanic Heritage Month as a way to celebrate his Salvadoran roots and highlight the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.
“I think the richness of Hispanic heritage comes from the diversity found within our cultures,” he says. “This month is a great opportunity for folks to celebrate the fact that that they’re not only Hispanic, but also a Puerto Rican in New York, a Cuban in Miami, or a Salvadoran in California. It’s correct to say that we’re all Hispanic, but it’s incorrect to say that we’re all the same.”
Jose says relationship building remains a key part of who he is both personally and professionally. He reports a warm and welcoming experience in the early part of his time with the company, and says he looks forward to more opportunities to develop his talents in the coming years.
“I can’t really remember a time when I’ve felt more supported in a workplace. We’re growing and we still have a lot of work to do, but our goals are achievable.”
Andres Formas – People & Culture Director, Learning & Development and People Analytics
Originally from Chile, Andres joined ISS in 2010 and transitioned to a U.S.-based role in 2019. He now oversees human resources across multiple Latin American countries, which he says gives him a chance to make a direct impact on the lives of others. Andres says his position also provides ongoing opportunities for him to challenge himself and expand his leadership abilities.
“Taking on a new role in a different country was a big leap, completely outside my familiar territory,” he says. “But I believe it’s exactly what I needed to grow as a more adaptable, versatile professional. Opportunities don’t come knocking twice. Don’t hesitate to venture out of your comfort zone and take on new challenges. You should always feel like you’re growing—anyone who raises their hand, builds their network, and prioritizes growth has the potential to do anything.”
